MINUTE REGARDING THE DEATH PENALTY
Abington Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends affirms its opposition to the death penalty. As Quakers, we believe in the sanctity of human life and in the potential of each human being to serve as an agent of Divine Will. We agree that the deliberate taking of a human life under any circumstances is an absolute and irrevocable denial that there is God in everyone.
Capital punishment is an inconsistent and hypocritical way to show that killing is wrong. Killing a murderer in revenge for his crime is society descending to the level of the criminal. It is a calculated and tragically irrevocable act that leaves no room for human error.
QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION
- What can we do to prevent rage, hatred, and the need for vengence?
- What meaning can we bring to those in prison for life?
- What can we do to help those in law enforcement to consider restitution and making amends part of the rehabilitation of prisoners?
- What are the alternatives to capital punishment?
